Is it OK to use Red Delicious Apples instead of Granny Smith to an Apple Crisp?

I know the recipe usually calls for a tart apple like Granny Smith but how will it come out if you use Red Delicious apples instead? I see you can use lemon juice or peel to make them tarter. Would orange juice do the same thing? Any advice would be helpful.

  1. if you don't like granny smiths, try a different kind of apple, like a gala or braeburn... they are a bit harder, the same type of consistency as a granny smith, but much sweeter and more palatable flavor. Don't use a red delicious for baking or cooking becuase like the first person said it will 'melt' when it's cooked. my suggestion? Try Honeycrisp's... they're the best apples... and completely seasonal. fall time only. Perfect for holiday cooking. :)

apples, wine, cheese and olive oil all have one thing in common,,, don't cook with it unless you love eating it by itself.

  2. if you can't get or find granny smith, use gala or macintosh apples. Macintosh provides a nice balanced apple flavor. This is apple harvest season so you should have no prob.

  3. I have used, ida, red delicious, golden delicious, granny smith, cortland, empire, macintosh and thats all I could remember now. red delicious is considered one of the firmer apples but it lacks in tartness that you would need. use lemon juice.

Psst I live near 3 apple groves. and bake apples of all kinds.

I think you guys are thinking cortland or macintosh. they mush and are good for applesauce

granny smith-used in recipes because it's qualities are both tart and firm.

  4. Granny Smith apples are a more firm apple than the Red Delicious. The Red Delicious will give you a mushy crisp.
